This is a big deal. You need to keep yourself safe while out traveling the world so you can continue to have amazing adventures!  These tips can’t guarantee your safety of course, but following these tips will certainly help.

  1. Don’t advertise that you are alone. It’s not something you want to draw attention to. If someone asks you can say your friend or your boyfriend was tired and stayed back at the hotel, or you are meeting up with your friends soon.
  2. Make sure someone always knows where you are. Drop a pin, use Find my iPhone, send a text or call someone at home telling them where you are and when to expect you back at wherever you’re staying. Check in with your person whenever you get back to your room.
  3. Don’t walk around in the dark alone. You shouldn’t do this anywhere, ever. It’s just not safe. Public areas with lots of people and activities going on are a different story, but it’s never a good idea to find yourself isolated on a dark street with a questionable creepy dude lurking around.
  4. Don’t get drunk or intoxicated with other recreational substances. The last thing you want to do when you’re alone on a solo trip is impair your decision making ability. Stay sober.
  5. Try to blend in. Avoid drawing attention to yourself as a tourist. It makes you a target for pick pockets, and for being mugged. Make sure whatever bag you are carrying zips closed so someone can’t reach into it.

Solo traveling can be very rewarding, don’t let this scare you. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings and avoid situations that could put you at risk. Happy travels!
