Katie’s Top 5 Travel Mistakes

There are lots of things that make traveling more difficult and sometimes there is nothing you can do about that. Here are some mistakes to avoid on your trip to improve your experience.

  1. Packing too much stuff. Odds are you won’t need all of those clothes so leave them home. If you really do end up needing something, you can probably buy it. Remember, you have to carry all of your stuff around. Stick to carry on luggage only. It’s much quicker getting out of airports if you can skip baggage claim.
  2. Over scheduling your itinerary. I get it, you’re in this amazing place that you may never be able to make it back to. You want to check everything off of that bucket list. Don’t you want to take the time to enjoy some of these bucket list places though? Landing somewhere to snap a picture and then running off to the next photo op is hardly a worthwhile experience. I recommend making a list and choosing your favorites. Schedule an activity in the morning and then another one either in the afternoon or evening for each day of your trip. Take time to wander and enjoy your meals in between. You might even consider resting. It’s really nice to return from your vacation not feeling like you need another one because you’re so exhausted. My advice is to take your time to enjoy your experience and don’t over schedule.
  3. Not trying the local cuisine. It’s part of the cultural experience of visiting a new place and it will enrich your life. Even if you don’t love the food, at least give it a try. You might be surprised.
  4. Failure to consider the impact of jet lag. Give your body time to adjust. That first day is always rough. Taking a red eye looks nice on paper because you get a whole day, but you’re going to feel it by early afternoon. I would only schedule one thing the day of arrival, not a full days worth of activities. Get to bed early and start your next day well rested. You will feel so much better and enjoy your experience more if you’re not dragging.
  5. Not being flexible. Life happens. Sometimes historical monuments are undergoing refurbishment and you’re unable to visit. Don’t let it ruin your whole trip. Find something else to do. Ask a local if you’re not sure what to do. My experiences of taking advice about activities from locals have always been outstanding.

This is how I travel. Of course this is not the only way to do things, but I have found that in planning my trips with these things in mind I have really amazing experiences. I think you will too.
